Honest Advice About Work-Life Balance for Metro Detroit Real Estate Entrepreneurs

How do you manage balancing personal life and a full-time job, a family, all while trying to grow your multi-family portfolio?

This is a question I hear often, especially from aspiring real estate investors. As someone who built a business and real estate portfolio from the ground up, I know that perfect balance is largely a myth—especially in the early days. The truth? Success demands a focused, sometimes relentless effort.

The Power of Focus and Simplicity

Success comes from focus. I’ve seen time and time again that distractions destroy businesses. Many entrepreneurs try to do too much—fix-and-flips, Airbnbs, boutique hotels, all while trying to master multifamily investing. My advice? You can do anything, but not everything.

Personally, I only invest in and operate multi-family real estate. That singularity of focus has been the key to my growth in the Metro Detroit real estate market. Just like when Steve Jobs returned to Apple and simplified their product line, focusing on fewer, more powerful efforts can lead to massive results.

Work-Life Mix, Not Balance

Forget the outdated idea of work-life balance. What I believe in is work-life integration. My wife and I work crazy hours building our three vertically integrated businesses. But that also gives us the freedom to live where we want, travel when we want, and design the life we love. We may work on Saturdays, but we also spend winters in Newport Beach because we hate the cold.

This flexibility—taking midweek date days or fitting in workouts anytime—comes from entrepreneurship. Owning your real estate business and portfolio offers the freedom you simply can’t get in a traditional job.

Overwhelmed? Good. That Means You’re Growing.

Feeling overwhelmed is part of the entrepreneurial journey. It often signals growth, not failure. Here are two mindset tools I use to stay grounded:

1. Measure Backward, Not Forward

Don’t measure your happiness against future achievements. Instead, look back six months or six years—see how far you’ve come. Progress, not perfection, is the goal. This shift alone can change your entire mindset.

2. Build a Personal Development Routine

  • Journaling: I’ve kept journals for years. Write as if your goals are already accomplished. Reflect on setbacks. See how far you’ve come. If you don’t reflect, you’ll project.
  • Subtractive Success: Eliminate what no longer serves you. Get rid of bad habits. Clear space for the right ones.
  • Daily Note Cards: Each day, I write empowering statements on index cards. I started this when I was in debt and had no traction. Writing things like “I’m a real estate mogul who owns 1,000 units” helped me adopt that identity. What you tell yourself shapes your reality.
